The sufferings of the holy martyr Philosopher

This holy martyr of Christ the Philosopher [Philosopher - a non-proprietary name, as well as other names learned by this saint. Under May 31 it is placed for the sake of the name of Justinian the Philosopher, whose memory is celebrated on June 1.] originated from the vicinity of the city of Alexandria [Alexandria - a city in Egypt, founded by Alexander the Great at the mouth of the Nile River on the Mediterranean Sea]. .

When he heard the seductive and shameless words of the adulterous woman who came to him, the valiant martyr closed his eyes so as not to look at her, but his eyebrows and ears he could not close, he was bound, and therefore he could not do anything about it. Then he did this. Biting his tongue with his teeth and causing himself great pain, he did not hear from pain what the shameless woman instilled in him, and since he could not cover his nostrils, he wet his unclean bed with his bloody tongue, heavily smeared his clothes and thus remained unharmed from temptation. Such an act was committed by the valiant martyr, but the torturer did not obey this.

His feast day is celebrated on 15 January, the same day as the feast of Saint Hermes, Apostle of the Seventy (see November 6).
